Some people are born leaders but no one is born a congregational leader. Becoming a strong, centered leader of a Unitarian Universalist congregation takes commitment, focus, and knowledge. Effective congregational leaders are, first and foremost, grounded in their own Unitarian Universalist faith. Additionally, they know how to develop and maintain healthy and vital congregations; they appreciate the difference between religious leadership and secular leadership; and they understand the role of congregational dynamics as they lead their congregations through good and challenging times.

Effective congregational leaders incorporate their Unitarian Universalist values into their leadership style and lead from a place of integrity and purpose.

The Southland Unitarian Universalist Leadership Experience is an opportunity for current and future leaders to deepen their understanding of congregational leadership and to develop their abilities with other UU leaders. For the most significant impact on a congregation's health and vitality, we especially encourage congregations to send teams of leaders to learn and develop together.

Leadership is the spiritual process of discerning what one believes (clarity), acting on that belief in the public arena (decisiveness), and standing behind that action (responsibility) despite the varied responses of people (courage).
